I've been somewhat dismissive of the D800. I mean, I know it's going to be a good camera but I've confined it for studio use and landscapes in my head. Then I saw this:

Admittedly if I had a D800 and posting shots I'd be doing it with a range of ISO's which would be nice to see. But I have to say, it's certainly got me more interested, especially since it's the about the same price as Canon's new 24-70mm 2.8 MkII L....

I think the real question may be, "Why are you listening to what Leica owners have to say?"

Agreed that we need to wait until people who paid real money for the thing have a chance to test the beast out. Around the office though, it seems like most would agree that "on paper," it does look like quite the bang for the buck. I wouldn't mind getting one... However I'd rather have all the same features except less MP (18'sh is fine!) with improved ISO capabilities and better dynamic range capabilities that at least match that of the D4. Duh. I have an inkling that we'll see that appear in the next year or so. I can wait.

Nice one Simon. I miss the days when you could select NOT to show photos and status updates you comment on, for my friends' sake more than mine! Not a fan of their privacy settings at the moment, especially the ticker. But thanks for this post :-) I'll share it!

Hey Sime, good tips for the newbies. Another thing to remember is that even if you have a photo set to 'Friends', if you tag someone, then their friends can also see and comment on the photo. I'm not sure if there is a setting that you can change for that?

Will I make the most of the 1DX? Hell, no. I haven't with the 7D...as long as it's got the 'P for Professional' toggle dial shenanigans I'm all set to go. But the satisfaction lost by being a slightly above average camera owner will be overpowered by the smugness of being able to sidle up to a D3s owner and, during idle chat, innocently ask -

"Thought of upgrading that? D4? That's just expensive firmware isn't it? No, no, I meant Canon...say a G1x perhaps?"

Without new stuff, we'd lose the chance of self amusement and that's the most powerful force in the universe.

I have two friends who now each own a Nikon D3s.

I have a 7D.

I am fed up for them walking out of rooms lit by a couple of candles and a small window, waving their 6,400 ISO 9 shot, handheld, bracketed images at me whilst nonchalantly saying, "That looks ok, doesn't it? What do *you* think?".

I need a 1DX because, well frankly it's the only non-arrestable way I can ram their D3s's up their....

Larger cities do have pro orientated camera shops that carry TTP gear. just not every shopper is familiar with their location. We are all in the quest for the perfect camera bag. After about 4 or 5 bag purchases, often duplicates just in different cors or similar size, a light bulb goes off and one starts to make better decisions about what one really needs and can visualize the bag setup. I too will visit a local camera store to view new products, then depending on what the "on shelf" stock is, store and staff experience I might buy it in store. If its available online, cheaper and I can wait I'll order it online.
