Had an hour with my little cousin the other day, and a couple of her friends – we took a handful of photos, I’m not really a people type photographer… I mean, I love taking photos of people, but usually I don’t have to talk to them / direct them at all (think live music) but this was certainly a fun experience… I’m posting the ones that they ‘approved’ after we filtered them down… I’d like your critique on them (the photos, not my cousin and her friends)
Well, there goes 2011… What is the one thing that will stick in your head from 2011?
Mine? Maybe Japan… That was pretty hard hitting… Personally? Starting to work for myself – that has also been pretty hard hitting… Oh, and then there’s leaving the UK after 9.6 years… That was pretty hard hitting…

lovely friend, Deanne Fitzmaurice, and I have been talking a lot about Media Storm lately, a website that I keep an eye on for amazing stories. I’ve not been there in a little while, and with Deanne joining Twitter a couple of days back, I noticed that she was following Founder and Executive Producer, Brian Storm – Then earlier today I had their email in telling me about the latest news and content on the website. I finally made it across this evening and found “a Darkness Visible | Afghanistan” (VII Photographer, Seamus Murphy – Please have a look at his website, he’s brilliant) Well, there’s nothing more I need say – watch the video, I challenge you to not find it moving.
Based on 14 trips to Afghanistan between 1994 and 2010, A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan is the work of photojournalist Seamus Murphy. His work chronicles a people caught time and again in political turmoil, struggling to find their way. See the project at http://mediastorm.com/publication/a-darkness-visible-afghanistan
“There’s not one light modifier that’s sorta the answer to everything… So it’s just nice to kinda have a tool box full of different kinds of tools that you can shape and hold light any way you want it…”
I see a lot of posts like the following on the thinkTANK Photo Twitter feed, and I’ve got to say – I understand where they’re coming from… Even before I found thinkTank, and subsequently started working with them, I had a strange desire to find the perfect bag! I know the perfect bag might not exist for you yet, but I’ve certainly found the holy grail…
I wanted to share my current camera bag list with you guys, and very briefly what I use them for… [If you're hard of hearing, click for a bigger version]
Camera bag heaven?
Logistics Manager | Elinchrom studio lights / Cables / Triggers / Reflectors / Orbis / Strobes / Modifiers / Stuff
Skin Strobe | Loops through the end loops on most of the thinkTANK Photo bags with loops / 580EXII* from above
Retrospective 20 | Great for photowalks / smaller concerts / day out with the family (think nappies, bottle, camera, stuff!) 5DMKII / 24-70, 70-200
Urban Disguise 60V1.0 | Day in the office bag / Used this for two years with 17″ MacBook Pro / 5DMKII or 30D with 50mm f/1.4 attached.. plus STUFF
StreetWalker HD | My first thinkTANK Photo camera bag / Takes all my gear 5DMKII & Grip / 30D & Grip / 16-35, 50, 24-70, 70-200, 100-400 and a flash or two.. AND my 17″ MacBook Pro GREAT backpack!
HydroPhobia 70-200 | For those of you that have ever photographed a festival (etc) in the rain with a pathetic plastic bag leaking like a leaking thing… get one, you will thank me… (and eye piece!)
Skin Double Wide | The smaller thinkTank Photo bags that you get with the modular / skin sets can be used for SO many things..
Not in this picture, but loved as much, or more…
Retrospective 5 | Smallest Retro bag, carries my Sony NEX-5 / Lens adaptor / Canon 24-70 / Canon 50 f/1.4 / SLR Magic f/2.8 plus flash and stuff
Pro Speed Belt | It’s a belt, you wear it and hang your gear from it – the freedom of “look mah, no hands” it really is that good… Sometimes I will take a roller with the dividers taken out, my gear packed in either modular or skin components, already attached to my pro speed belt (I’m a 34 in jeans and take a M-L) …open the roller, clip the belt on and go shoot…
Modular and Skin Kits | A wide variety of component bags to slot on to your desired camera belt, much useful, oh yes…
Well, that’s my lot – aside from my Retrospective 10, which my dad now uses as his camera bag / day bag!…
