Bullet Proof?

I wish I was, but I’m not…

A particularly uninspiring day of back and forth emails with “promotions” people, and some such bollocks. A completely misunderstood email, and a strong desire to want to slap someone – but really, life is too short. I’ll be on her black list, I’ll “never work in this town again” well, we’ll see.

There’s all this “hype” surrounding being a music photographer, unless you’re commissioned by someone and have regular work – it’s really hard to get anywhere with it. It can be quite depressing, being knocked back at a ratio of about 1:8 – Now, I’m not the worlds greatest photographer and, a lot of the time there is a little to be desired, but I’m not bad and I’m dedicated… Is that why I don’t get gigs? Are there “brilliant” photographers in every possible position available in London? Well, I’ve had a look at a few of the images that are submitted and they’re pretty rough. So, I don’t feel so bad.

Is this image “that bad” (I’m not looking for back patting, I’m just saying)

Maybe it’s time for a different approach?

  1. I truly believe a big part of this is the old “not what you know, but who…”. Obviously there are some great accomodating people out there who do give newcomers a chance – but they are definitely outnumbered by the ones more concerned with ‘justifying their position’.

The quality of your work is unquestionable mate, and your break will come. Then the same people turning you down now, will be begging for your services.

On the other side I think there are a lot of photographers out there for personal gain – who don’t necessarily have a passion for the subject, but see it as a step toward something else (usually something plastered in £ signs) – so you can kind of understand some of the obstacles placed in the path of newcomers…

  2. personally i think it’s an awesome image… the colors are fab and the tones are just right. really dramatic. i’m guessing it’s shot at a high ISO but it doesn’t look it… you’ve done a great job.
it’s hard not to doubt yourself — particularly in an uncertain, “every man for himself” field such as photography. but i think your work is ace and imho you needn’t worry one bit… just keep shooting :)

  3. Honestly, it’s all about who you know. It doesn’t matter how good you are… You’ve seen many times yourself people in the pit who have nothing to do there…

And it’s not about to change anytime soon. So cultivate your relationship with the people with influence, and get in there!

I have seen your work, you’re at leas as good as any of them in there!

  4. If I could RT everything you have just written I would. Why have I not read your blogs before now?? You may have taken my own thoughts and written them.

FYI you are as good, probably better.

  5. Nice work! Like everyone all ready said it’s who you know and ask for referral with the one you’re already know. It’s working trust me, specially between events coordinator.
