NiN | Sonisphere 2009

If I was asked, and I wouldn’t be asked, what I honestly thought of the Nine Inch Nails performance on Sunday at the 2009 Sonisphere Festival, this is what I would say…

Trent Reznor, lead singer of prolific band Nine Inch Nails wasn’t his usual self on Sunday. He appeared to be giving it everything he had left in his being, pouring what was left into the microphone in one last feeble attempt to please the pathetic, yelling fans that have stuck with NiN for so long. Reviews of the performance are calling it “Soft” and others sighting that “NiN really didn’t deserve to be there” …So, they had a bad day? there were clearly issues and hell, I salute Trent and NiN for the performance they put on and for the years of amazing music that they’ve given us… And if you don’t like it, you can bugger right off” – Sime | http://gtvone.com

I am only accredited to use this photo for the commission that I had and for this, my portfolio. Please, for the love of all things holy, do NOT steal this image as it is © 2009 Simon Pollock and NOT for you to post on your blogs or your facebooks without PRIOR permission… (I’m not normally like this, but if you steal it and use it and I get banned from shooting, I will have you killed… honest)

  1. Beautiful image! I’m not a NIN fan, but have learned to like them a bit since they’ve been posting those 5D mk ii videos :)

    THanks for sharing

  2. I am and have been a huge NIN fan for 18 years – I was at Sonisphere and I am one of those people who were disappointed with their set – maybe it is because I knew it would be their last performance in the UK and just wanted them to go out with a bang or perhaps I just felt the set would have been more appropriate for an intimate NIN gig rather than a festival environment where a portion of the people there would have been experiencing NIN for the first time. In addition to this they came on late and then finished their set 10 minutes early!

Whatever way, it was clear that Trent was having an emotional day – there were definitely tears in his eyes and of course this may have been an off day. I am and will always be a huge NIN fan, this performance will not change that fact and I think it is o.k. to express disappointment in a constructive way and in the correct context.

  3. I wanted to be there a lot. I missed the London dates and have seen him as many times as I can, I am a huge fan, and I have seen some very average festival performances from them, but some brilliant ones too.

You got to tell us who the commission was for so we can see what they pick and put out dude!

  4. Bloody hell Sime, how threatening is that last bit of your post. Not that I would ever dream of infringing on anyone’s image copyright or right clicking on any of your shots. But even so, I’m still a little bit scared.

  5. It’s the difference between me shooting and not shooting gigs ever again, I reckon you’d be a bit protective too?

…or do I need to send the boys around ;-)

  6. NIN could of, and should of, blew every other act off the stage but Trent decided to go all arty, windswept and interesting and instead played music to queue for more beer to. Head Like A Hole? Bite The Hand That Feeds? A pretentious set from a guy who has had a pop at others for exactly the same.

Beautiful photography Simon and I would like to possess all of your Sonisphere images (I would like to send you a blank cheque….but I can’t) so I could peruse them every day. The Metallica/fire shots have left me feeling most moist.
